Those who choose to fly into the city will arrive at the vast Charleston International Airport (CHS) complex, which is located to the northwest of the city center, close to the I-26 interstate. The city's Greyhound bus station stands along Dorchester Road and features regular services to a range of important cities, such as Atlanta, New York City and Savannah.

Traveling around the city itself, local streetcars are operated by the Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH) and run along four main routes. Situated along Gaynor Avenue, the Amtrak train station is a fair distance to the north of central Charleston.

Metropolitan Charleston covers a vast area and is a true sprawling city, incorporating coastal plains and small island areas. The actual historic city center is fairly compact and easy to walk around, being located on the southern side of the main peninsula. A number of impressive bridges connect many places of interest around the city, including James Island and the Mount Pleasant area.

Several tourist information centers are available in the city, all of which offer a range of maps and colorful brochures. The best include the Chamber of Commerce along Mary Street, the Charleston Preservation Society on King Street, the Historic Charleston Foundation Preservation Center on East Bay Street, and also the Visitors Information Center on Meeting Street.
